Tony Randall, Jarrod Emick, Jill Powell
Spark Lively Cast of TUTS' 'Damn Yankees'

HOUSTON, TX - Droll comedy sophisticate TonyRandall, Broadway Tony winner Jarrod Emick and TUTS audience favorite Jill Powell headline the effervescent cast of Theatre Under The Stars' Damn Yankees,
the Faustian baseball comedy now playing through April 2, 2000 at the Arena Theatre, 7326 Southwest Freeway. Showtime is 8pm Tuesday-Friday, 2pm and 8pm Saturday, and 2pm and 7:30pm Sunday.

Written by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop for its initial Tony-winning 1955 Broadway opus, Damn Yankees is based on Wallop's novel "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant." Its sassy score introduced a flurry of grandstand hits like "(You Gotta Have) Heart," "Whatever Lola Wants," "Two Lost Souls" and "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO." Randall, in his TUTS debut, stars as the devilish Mr. Applegate, hellbent on capturing the soul of a middle-aged Washington Senators fan. Emick reprises his 1994 Tony-winning role of Joe Hardy, the youthfull incarnation of the Senators fan who barters his soul to Applegate for a chance to beat
the Yankees in the pennant race. And Powell glories in the role of the seductive imp Lola with its signature Fosse-esque choreography.

Hafner and Marcy Bannor as Meg's friends, Sister and Doris; Jody Ashworth, Brad Drummer and Gair Morris as Senators teammates Rocky, Smokey and Sohovik; Joel Blum as the Senators' manager, Van-Buren; Bill Hardy as Welch, owner of the Washington Senators; and Joe Finkelstein as the Baseball Commissioner.

Comprising the athletic song and dance ensemble are Leo Alvarez, Becky Berstler, Bill Brassea, Randie Shane Brotman, Jessica Leigh Brown, NUcheHe Bruckner, Kin Daigle, Rob Flebbe, Neal Richard Lee, Keith Mahoney, Sean Michael McKnight, Mia Price and Stevi Van Meter.

Damn Yankees is directed for TUTS by Bick Goss, a Fosse protegee, and choreographed by John Maclnnis, a Broadway dance 'veteran (Guys and Dolly, Steel Pier, How To Succeed..., Jerome Robbins' Broadway, Me and My Girl) who now directs and choreographs the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular. Music direction is by conductor Wayne Green (Zorro, The Musical, Guys and Dolls, Grease, Grand Hotel and Scrooge). Sets are by John Farrell, with Broadway costumes by David C. Woolard. Lighting designer is Kirk Bookman; sound designer, Beth Berkeley; and hair designer, Catherine Tucker.

Randall made his New York stage debut in 1941, but he achieved worldwide fame on television from 1970-'75 as the obsessively tidy Felix Unger in The Odd Couple. Now 80 years young, he enjoys a versatile career that has spanned the serial drama One Man's Family, nearly two dozen movies including three with Doris Day and Rock Hudson, the TV sitcoms Mr. Peepers, The Tony Randall Show and Love, Sidney, myriad acclaimed stage productions and countless TV guest spots. Randall also is Artistic Director of the National Actor's Theatre, which he established in New York in 1991.

Emick received not only the Tony but the Drama Desk and Theatre World awards as well for his Broadway performance in Damn Yankees. He previously had starred on Broadway and National tour as Chris in Miss Saigon. He also appeared on National tour as Enjolras in Les Miserables. His television projects include "Andersonville" (TNT), "L.A. Firefighters" (Fox), "Pacific Palisades" (Fox) and "It's True," a CBS pilot.

Powell makes her second appearance at TUTS , where last season audiences and critics alike applauded her Grand Hotel performance as Flaemmchen, the ambitious typist. New York audiences have seen Jill on
Broadway in Grand Hotel and at Lincoln Center in The Music Man. But she is perhaps best known as Marcy Breen-Lafferty on As The World Turns (CBS-TV), where she created soap opera havoc for 2-1/2 years.

Continuing TUTS'2000 Season of all "Best Musicals" are Lloyd Webberand Rice's Tony winner, Evita, July 11-23 at the Wortham; London's Olivier-winning Buddy (The Buddy Holly Story), August 8-20 at the Wortham; the Tony-winning sneak peak at the Founding Fathers in Philadelphia's Independence Hall entitled 1776, October 10-22 at the Arena; and, to usher in the holidays, a totally hip Tony-winning version of Frank Baum's beloved Oz classic entitled The Wiz, December 5-17 at the Arena.

HOUSTON, TX -- Film and television star Tony Randall takes the leading role in Damn Yankees,
Broadway's sporting twist on the Faust legend, to open Theatre Under The Stars' 2000 Season of "Best Musicals" March 21- April 2, 2000 at the Arena Theatre, 7326 Southwest Freeway, just as the legendary baseball team that inspired the musical also returns to Houston in exhibition at Enron Field. Paying further homage to the wave of "baseball fever" currently sweeping the city, TUTS extends the onstage fun of this hit musical with selected audience giveaways at every performance and ballpark-style concession favorites.

Awaiting a permanent home in the new Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in 2002, TUTS currently stages its five subscription musicals in two of Houston's most popular performance venues -- the Arena Theatre in Southwest Houston, where performances are "in the round" and no seat is more than 20 rows from the stage, and downtown in the luxurious Brown Theater at Wortham Center.

Randall, who achieved worldwide television fame as the obsessively tidy Felix Unger opposite Jack
Klugman's super-messy Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple (1970-'75), made his new York stage debut in 1941 in Circle of Chalk. After four years in the U.S. Army (1942-'46), he resumed his acting career in the serial drama One Man's Family, followed by the TV sitcom Mr. Peepers starring Wally Cox. Then the movies beckoned, and Randall appeared in more than a dozen, including three with Doris Day and Rock Hudson, before The Odd Couple made his a household name.

After two more sitcoms, The Tony Randall Show and Love, Sidney, and another half dozen movies, Randall in 1991 achieved a longtime dream by establishing the National Actor's
Theatre, a New York company that revives classic plays at affordable prices. Executive Producer of NAT, he continues to perform on stage and to make occasional guest television appearances.

Other stops on TUTS' five-show indoor season of "Best Musicals" are Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Tony-winning Evita, July 11-23 at the Wortham; London's Olivier-winning Buddy (Tite Buddy Holly Story), August 8-20 at the Wortham; the Tony-winning sneak peak at the Founding Fathers in Philadelphia's Independence Hall entitled 1776, October 10-22 at the Arena; and, to usher in the holidays, a totally hip Tony-winning version of Frank Baum's beloved Oz classic entitled The Wiz, December 5-17 at the Arena.

Damn Yankees, the Faustian baseball comedy, was written by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop based on Wallop's novel "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant." The plot unfolds with the devilish Mr. Applegate hellbent on capturing the soul of a middle-aged Washington Senators fan. The fan, Joe Boyd, is frustrated enough with his team's constant drudging by the New York Yankees to barter his own soul for a win. Joe' s "contract" with Applegate transforms Boyd into a youthful slugger named Joe Hardy, who can lead the Senators to victory. The seductive imp Lola's job is to keep Joe distracted from the deal-breaking pull of wife and home.

The show's solid-gold score, with words and music by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, boasts such show- stopping classics as "Two Lost Souls," Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets)," "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo" and "(You Gotta Have) Heart."

Damn Yankees first arrived on Broadway in 1955 starring Ray Walston as the sly Applegate and Gwen Verdon as Lola. Named "Best Musical of 1956," the show was co-written and directed by the great George Abbott, who also gave that golden age of musicals such hits as Call Me Madam, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Wonderful Town, The Pajama Game, Once Upon a Mattress and Fiorello! Its choreographer was now-legendary Robert Fosse.

Nearly four decades later, in 1994, Damn Yankees flouted its staying power by becoming an award-winning Broadway revival directed by Jack O'Brien, choreographed by Rob Marshall, and starring Victor Garber and Bebe Neuwirth with Jarrod Emick as slugger Joe Hardy. The subsequent National tour starred Jerry Lewis and Charlotte D'Amboise.

For TUTS, Damn Yankees will be directed by Bick Goss, a 30-year veteran of directing and/or
choreographing with or for such artists as Michelle Pfeiffer, Bob Fosse, Harold Prince, Tommy Tune, Michael Bennett, Christopher Reeve, Marlo Thomas, Leslie Caron, Donna McKechnie, Billy Crystal and Gwen Verdon, among others. Choreographer is John Maclnnis, a Broadway dance veteran (Guys and Dolls, Steel Pier, How To Succeed..., Jerome Robbins' Broadway, Me and My Girl) who now directs and choreographs- the Radio City-Music Hall Christmas Spectacular. Music direction is by conductor Wayne Green, who last season fashioned the score for TUTS' premiere of Zorro, The Musical and was music director/conductor for Guys and Dolls, Grease, Grand
Hotel and Scrooge. Sets are by John Farrell, with Broadway costumes by David C. Woolard.

Lighting designer is Kirk Bookman; sound designer, Beth Berkeley; and hair designer, Catherine Tucker. Production stage manager is Roger Allan Raby; stage manager, Terry Cranshaw.
