The Back Porch Players: (from left) Brandy Barfield, Rick Olvera, Drew Dennard, and Rachael Kruk star in Lanford Wilson's BALM IN GILEAD from July 30th thru August 8th, 2004. Call ph.713-528-7461 for reservations.

The Back Porch Players are proud to announce the opening of their 2004-2005 Season! Hailed as the introduction into experimental theatre form, Lanford Wilson's Balm in Gilead gives us a rapid fire initiation into the street culture of New York City during the tumultuous 80's.Written while Lanford Wilson listened to the colorful characters in his neighborhood coffee house, Balm in Gilead winds through the lives of 25 people who are surviving the city with their wits, their guts and their bodies.

When it opened in 1965 at Café La Mama Experimental Theatre Club in New York City, fire marshals were called out to control the overflowing crowds of those trying to get a glimpse of this interactive, hyper-realistic piece of theatre. The Back Porch Players, founded by Houston's best and brightest young theatre artists, includes Dan Gordon, Claire McGinty, Morgan Rosse, and New York Times regarded actor, Matt Hune. They mounted this revival under the leadership of director Ann C. James.

Like the famed Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago-which burst onto the theatre scene in the eighties with a revival of Balm in Gilead- The Back Porch Players upcoming performance promises to secure its place in the Houston theatre arena. Playing to sold out crowds now for the past two years, The Back Porch Players are thrilled to bring this gritty American theatre classic to life.
