About the show

OVO is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects' home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.

Its love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.

NEWS ABOUT CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S OVO

Benefit events for the ONE DROP Foundation

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

For the official opening of its new show, OVO, in Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto, Cirque du Soleil will break with tradition and, for the very first time, organize a 25th anniversary gala evening to benefit the ONE DROP Foundation. Each of these three special evenings will culminate in a unique celebration under the company’s 25th anniversary theme and colours.

In Montreal, the event will take place on Friday, May 8, 2009 under the Grand Chapiteau on the Jacques-Cartier Pier at the Old Port.

ONE DROP fights against poverty by providing access to water and raising awareness among individuals and communities about the need for mobilization in order to make safe water accessible to all, in sufficient quantity, today and tomorrow.

Discover how you can make a difference for the cause of water by visiting the Foundation’s Website.

OVO:  Acrosport.  Combining elements of dance, acrobatics, athleticism and sheer agility, five yellow and-red fleas fling themselves through the air and come together in graceful, perfectly balanced sculptural formations.  For tickets and general information, please call toll free 1-800-450-1480 or log onto www.cirquedusoleil.com/ovo

Cirque unveils OVO!

Friday, April 24, 2009

Our latest touring show, OVO, will have its world premiere under the Grand Chapiteau on the Quays of the Old Port of Montreal on May 8, 2009. OVO is the 25th Cirque production in 25 years.

Preview performances will run from April 23 to May 7.

The cast of OVO comprises 53 performing artists from 13 countries.

OVO:  Ants.  The hardest working insects in the community are the bright red Ants. As soon as they’re awake they spend their day gathering food: On the menu today – kiwis and corn. But it’s not all work. They play with their food, too – with their feet – in an astonishing display of precision juggling that climaxes with ants juggling ants.  For tickets and general information, please call toll free 1-800-450-1480 or log onto www.cirquedusoleil.com/ovo

OVO:  Orvalho (Head Balancing).  A Dragonfly performs a graceful balancing act in and out of the slender stalks and twisting tendrils of an elegant plant. It takes extraordinary control and strength to transfer his weight from one hand to the other as he maintains equilibrium upside down on top of the foliage.  For tickets and general information, please call toll free 1-800-450-1480 or log onto www.cirquedusoleil.com/ovo

In the news: OVO: Hatching successful

Friday, September 04, 2009

(Le Soleil, Quebec City) Very often our reaction on discovering insects is to recoil and scream. But we would happily adopt the colourful Cirque du Soleil bugs and marvel at their gracefulness over and over again.

From termite mounds to spiders' webs, we ventured through a little ecosystem where the arrival of a stranger carrying a large egg had caused amazement. We also saw love blossom between a plump ladybug and a bluebottle fly.

The opening hand-balancing act—with its combination of strength and flexibility—set the bar high for what was to come. The beautiful red ants that followed did not disappoint. Rolling kiwis and corn cobs on their nimble feet, they later juggled bodies. Ants launched into the air grab flying tambourines with incredible skill and precision.

White butterflies provided an instant of complete grace, their flight a breathtaking feat of sublime elegance.

A little danger. . .
There was a hint of danger with the amazing slack wire act. An acrobat performed a series of pirouettes and cartwheels on an unstable wire. He walked on his hands, feet in the air, before dazzling us by riding a unicycle along the wire. Sitting on it? No, too easy! He pedalled with his hands, leaving his legs pointing skyward and resting his head on the handlebars! The fun-loving ladybug and the bluebottle fly brought humour to the show, their difficult love affair providing a common thread.

Before the two critters found each other, a clown tried to find potential lovers for the fly. . . I was even one of the candidates: the clown made me show a bit of shoulder, re-styled my hair and made me meow in an attempt to seduce the fly, who, in the end, was not interested! All the better, as I wasn't really into him either—but it was good fun! [. . .] OVO is teeming with moments of genius and highlights such as Créatura, a sort of giant slinky with five limbs that move mysteriously.

OVO:  Butterflies (Spanish Web Duo).  Combining hand-to-hand, ballet, contortion and an aerial flying act, this pair of Butterflies performs a pas de deux on a rope that allows them to swoop and land, leap and fly in perfect unison.  For tickets and general information, please call toll free 1-800-450-1480 or log onto www.cirquedusoleil.com/ovo

OVO:  Slackwire.  In a tour-de-force performance a spider defies gravity and physics in a succession of seemingly impossible feats of strength and balance as he traverses a wire that appears to give him no support. At one point he hangs at a 45-degree angle over the ground, some 15 feet below, and he tops that with an upside-down unicycle act. And the wire is in almost-constant motion up and down, adding to the degree of difficulty.  For tickets and general information, please call toll free 1-800-450-1480 or log onto www.cirquedusoleil.com/ovo

OVO:  Wall.  This act features some 20 artists running, jumping, and walking across – and straight up – an 8m vertical wall without artificial support. Power track and trampolines give them the speed, lift and momentum to take flight. Their athletic ability, physical strength and team coordination take care of the rest.
